Goodbye 2017 Gardening Year

2018-03-01T16:17:09+00:00

With my windmill palms snugly wrapped for the winter, another gardening year ends at Woodland Cottage. And a new gardening year begins, with a fire to welcome the Winter Solstice and the arrival of the longer days that I love.

First Frost/Freeze of Season Due this Weekend in D.C. Area

2018-03-01T16:43:53+00:00

Right on time, the first frost/freeze of the season is due this weekend, here in the Magical Mid-Atlantic, specifically Friday night. With the turning of the seasons comes a list of things to do to put your garden to bed for the winter season so it can rest: Without delay, bring your tender houseplants and tropicals inside. Check for insects and spray accordingly, if you believe in spraying. [...]

Please Be Sure to Water!

2018-03-07T17:29:18+00:00

I think all of us here in the Magical Mid-Atlantic were hoping for some good, soaking rains from Tropical Storm Hermine this past week; alas, it is drier than ever.  We must be very diligent about watering (soaking) our gardens as we prepare our plants to go dormant before they head into winter. I am beginning to see plants drying out in some of the gardens I am [...]

FREEZE WARNING Tonight for the D.C. Area

2018-03-08T16:18:35+00:00

Take photos of your favorite plant combinations, before the frost, so you can repeat them next year. Here, we have variegated spider plants, purple heart, and sprengeri asparagus fern, all tender to frosts and freezes. Right on time, the first freeze of the season is due in the D.C. area tonight. Not all areas will see a freeze (or even a frost), but it's time to prepare, just the [...]

Don’t Forget to Water

2018-03-08T16:12:44+00:00

As Summer slowly begins to slip into Fall here in the Magical Mid-Atlantic, we enter the hot, dry weather of August and early September. The first signs of Fall are just becoming evident: shorter days; a new, golden quality to the late afternoon and evening light; and the fading of many flowers and vegetables in our gardens. Besides watering and weeding, there is not much else to do in [...]
